About ten years ago I was attending the high school graduation ceremony of a family teen. It was a beautiful ceremony at the country club – friends and family gathered together, dressed in elaborate gowns and suits, eating decadent food, drinking excessively, and celebrating the accomplishments these teens. Her friends were there, awkward but beautiful, and they were required to give speeches. In turn, each youth took the mic and gave a rendition of whatever was on their mind. Almost all of them used the phrase, “It’s been a really rough year.”

Those at my table found it funny. Then ironic. Then it was just odd. I think everyone can agree that high school is rough, even to those with means. But these words were being uttered in rote, by kids wearing Gucci, before a hundred steak-munching, Corona-chugging adults gathered to honor them.

I vowed to never say those words, except in irony.

I often wonder what sort of work I would be able to accomplish if I didn’t have life distracting me.
And yet, as I gaze out my window with that thought in mind, I also can’t help but think that those distractions are my life.

Nanowrimo starts today. The goal of Nanowrimo is to write enough every day that by the end of the month you have a novel. That is the plan. I’m on board this year, so expect the next posts to be rougher. It’s all about the word count, editing and clean up can come later.

Let Nanowrimo begin!
