07. Marriage Musings by Rook

As I awoke this morning, my gaze landed upon the beautiful form of Temptress sleeping beside me. It had been the third time we had slept, each time after exhausting our bodies together as we tried to extinguish the heat of lust that burned within ourselves. I couldn’t help but look down at her full lips, always a seductive red and shimmering in the morning light that drifted lazily into my bedroom. Those two delicious petals were parted slightly, allowing a soft inhale and exhale of air as she slumbered. Her curls were a disheveled nest, some of them lying across her face. Possessed of an unknown force, I had to reach forward and brush them aside to reveal more of her skin to the kiss of the sunlight. She was, and always would be, the most radiant creature in the universe.
This had been how I had first seen her decades ago. Not sleeping, but a beautiful portrait of perfection that shattered my dark, depraved world. She confused and frightened me, and I attacked her. Thankfully, her sister, Ancient Child had been there to stop my attack. And my life would never be the same again.
Suddenly my stomach fluttered with nervousness and my thoughts drifted away to what the future is going to hold. Marriage, my marriage. Not to my beautiful Temptress, but to another.
Thoughts of my love had me shifting away from the beauty beside me, and I sat up. The floor was warm from the sunlight and I stood, breaking the happy beam with my shadow.
Needing a moment to myself I picked up a cigarette on my way to the balcony door. Leaning against the dark wooden frame, I lit the smoke and took a long draw, pulling the spicy drug into my lungs. The tanbrosh smokes always cleared my head and made thinking easier, or so I told myself. The smoke curled about me, tainting the sunbeam that still cast out over my bed and Temptress, who still slept. I thought the drug would kill those butterflies in my belly, but they still fluttered as I watched her.
Marriage, to another.
Was I making a mistake?
