Playing Guards in the City and within the Iron Citadel

The guards in the city and at the citadel are prepared for all types of magic. While only a limited number of them actually use magic, they will call for backup. Patrols always have magical items on them, and at least one guard that can use magic. Guards that use magic are known as Watchmen, and they can be very powerful.

Once in jail, you know your own character, and you know what you character can do to escape. Assume that these guards can figure that out and will take appropriate measures to keep your character locked up. Whatever it takes, but no more. They are not going to throw a farmer in a maximum level holding cell. Fellow inmates are tough and dangerous, but aren’t going to be given too much freedom to cause trouble. Fights will start, but should be extinguished quickly. Solitary confinement is an option for punishment. Getting beat on by guards is not.

The justice system isn’t corrupt, and take lessons from modern times to how trials should be handled.

Pashen and I have had several fun games here, and we use these buildings and the guards as ways to enhance our role play. You can either see this as a way to beat the system, which isn’t that rewarding, or you can see this as a way to further your own storylines. Feel free to make contacts with the guards, you can play them as NPCs to enhance your own games.

Don’t play them as idiot corrupt cops, play them as the intelligent force of good that they are. Those players that do not play the City Guards as the serious threat/help they should be, may find themselves unable to play with the City of Gates rooms.

The Iron Citadel is made up of three buildings: the first is the Avurynon Safety Command (ASC), the second is Auvrynon Jail, and the third is Justice Hall.

In a land full of magic, every care has been taken to use magic for the good of the people. And that includes using it to help determine guilt or innocence of an offender. At the same time, it is recognized that magic can be used just as easily to disguise the true nature of a crime. Thankfully, there are numerous people that look out for the rights of those that have been accused of committing a crime. And there are people that seek the truth. Magic is but one tool. Intelligent investigation and diligent police work are just as valuable. It is a constant balance that must be held and maintained.

The first part of the Iron Citadel is the Auvrynon Safety Command or ASC. This functions as both a guardhouse and the heart of the police station. Guards that are young live in the barracks, though higher ranked officers can own private property in the city. Inside the ASC is a bureaucratic system that resembles modern police stations. Clerks and assistants serve as gateways to higher officials, and there always is paperwork that needs to be done. These hard workers are here so the city guards can fulfil their duty and be out on the streets.

Next is a jail designed to hold any prisoner. The truly dangerous are kept under 24 hour lock and key. However, the large populus is held in cells of 2-4 inmates. During the day, they are ushered into a central area for dining and recreational time. Those that are not a flight risk are even given time outside in a large caged yard. Throughout the whole building is a “Psychic Null Zone” that is powered by large crystals set in the foundation. This mind null zone affects every single occupant except for 3 mentalists that have crystal keys to bypass the null zone.

If an inmate is discovered to have magical abilities, they are harnessed with an anti-magic collar. This cuts them off from the fyres or other pools of magic, making them unable to access their source of power.

Guards that work at the Iron Citadel are watched carefully and are well paid and not overworked. They are intelligent and experienced and cannot be bribed. They are not fools and will not hesitate to use magical items designed to stun, debilitate or even render an offender unconscious.

Finally, Justice Hall is where trial takes place. Similar to modern times, Auvrynon holds trials of guilt or innocence before a group of jurors. These trials can take days or weeks, but every effort is made to see a case to a rapid end. Lawyers are classified as barristers and solicitors, and if a person cannot afford a barrister, one will be assigned. There is a tunnel that leads from the Jail to Justice Hall to make transport of criminals easy.
